Workshop: "Legal and Ethical Aspects of the Use of Laboratory Animals in Biomedical Research"

On October 26, 2019, Batumi Teaching University organized the Scientific Conference "Contemporary Challenges of Biomedicine". During the conference the workshop "Legal and Ethical Aspects of the Use of Laboratory Animals in Biomedical Research" was held under the guidance of Prof. Karen Mulkijanyan, President of GALAS, Head of the Department of Preclinical Pharmacological Research at Tbilisi State Medical University,  and Prof. Giorgi Pichkhaia - Deputy Director of A.Natishvili Institute of Morphology, member of GALAS. The following topics were highlighted during the workshop:

1. Planning and implementation of biomedical research. Key elements of a research project. Valid methods of research. Statistical processing of data.

2. Laboratory Animal Science - International Practice. Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in the US and EU, Education and Qualifications Required to Work With Animals - Overview of Key Approaches.

3. Modern requirements for biomedical experimental laboratories. Vivarium and research lab equipment, animal placement and storage standards. Biosafety levels.

4. What is IACUC - Biomedical Research Regulations and Ethical Aspects. Approve and monitor the research project/curriculum using animals at the university level. International and Local Legislation.
